Every person will decide what they think is acceptable, when it comes to looking for a chruch. However, to me, these are clear red flags.

The book of Hebrews explains that, as Christians, we only have one priest --Jesus. Chapter eight talks about this. It, also, talks about the new covenant; which replaces the old. As Christians, we live under God's new covenant.

Priests existed during the old covenant, and, under that covenant, all priests came from the tribe of Levi. So, why would I go to a church, where people use the term "priest" to describe its spiritual leaders, and they expect me to call these leaders "Father"?

Someone may ask, "what about calling a preacher 'pastor'?" After all, doesn't the Bible teach us not to use titles like "teacher"? Should a church have any spiritual leaders?

If you look at the early church, they did have leaders. In Titus 1:1-9, Paul wrote to Titus; instructing him to appoint church elders. So, we have no doubt that a godly church has leaders. However, it's important that we understand that church leaders are not priests, or intercessors to God. Only Jesus fills that role.

Because the early church appointed spiritual leaders, I have no problem understanding that a local church has leadership roles. However, in Matthew 23:1-12, we see how Jesus expects us to relate to one another. It's not done with an attitude that leaders hold any place of holy intercession. Instead, it's with an understanding that all Christians are children of God; each one with our unique spiritual gifts; as described in 1st Corinthians, chapters 12 through 14. 1st Corinthians 12:10, states that some have the gift of preaching.

So, different roles, in the church, is a biblical concept. However, we have to be careful to make sure that we're sticking to what is biblical, when we practice such things.

For instance, I won't choose to join a church that has a female pastor. This is because of what it says in 1st Corinthians 14:34-40.

In this day and age, it can be very unpopular to state that women shouldn't be in charge of something. However, because I'm a Christian, I base what is right, according to what Jesus teaches.

1st Corinthians 14:34-40, reads as follows:

the women should keep quiet in the meetings. They are not allowed to speak; as the Jewish Law says, they must not be in charge. If they want to find out about something, they should ask their husbands at home. It is a disgraceful thing for a woman to speak in a church meeting.

Or could it be that the word of God came from you? Or are you the only ones to whom it came? If anyone supposes he is God's messenger or has a spiritual gift, he must realize that what I am writing to you is the Lord's command. But if he does not pay attention to this, pay no attention to him.

So then, my friends, set your heart on proclaiming God's message, but do not forbid the speaking in strange tongues. Everything must be done in a proper and orderly way.

-1st Corinthians 14:34-40

I chose to print out this portion of scripture, because, not only does it state that women are not allowed to be in charge, Paul, specifically, points out that it's "the Lord's command". He then writes, "But if he does not pay attention to this, pay no attention to him."

This language is so clear that there's no way around it. However, we must, also, remember that these are rules pertaining to the church. It speaks nothing of a woman being in charge, in secular institutions.

Compare this specific language to what we read in 1st Corinthians, chapter 11. That chapter talks about women covering their heads, in worship. It states that women should cover their heads. However, it explains that this is a custom; rather than a command from God.

1st Corinthians 11:13-16, reads as follows:

Judge for yourselves whether it is proper for a woman to pray to God in public worship with nothing on her head. Why, nature itself teaches you that long hair on a man is a disgrace, but on a woman it is a thing of beauty. Her long hair has been given her to serve as a covering. But if anyone wants to argue about it, all I have to say is that neither we nor the churches of God have any other custom in worship.

-1st Corinthians 11:13-16

It's not hard to see the difference between the language, here, compared to what we read in 1st Corinthians 14:34-40. One is a command, while the other is a custom.
